DISEASE GLOSSARY

1.      Allergy

Allergies develop when your immune system reacts to foreign particles, such as pollen, bee venom, pet dander, or a meal that causes no reaction in the majority of individuals.

Antibodies are proteins produced by your immune system to fight them. When you have allergies, your immune system produces antibodies that identify a specific allergen as harmful even when it is not. When you come into contact with the allergen, your immune system's reaction can inflame your skin, sinuses, airways, or digestive tract.

Allergy symptoms can impact your lungs, sinuses, nasal passages, skin, and digestive system, depending on the substance. In extreme circumstances, allergies can cause anaphylaxis, a potentially fatal reaction.

2.      Hay fever

Hay fever, commonly known as allergic rhinitis, causes cold-like symptoms. These include a runny nose, sneezing, itchy eyes, congestion, and sinus pressure. Hay fever is triggered by an allergic reaction to a harmless outdoor or indoor substance that the body identifies as harmful (an allergen).

Pollen and dust mites are common allergens that can cause hay fever symptoms. Tiny particles of skin shed by cats, dogs, and other animals with hair or feathers (pet dander) can potentially cause allergies.
